green smoothie
it seems appropriate to start this site the way i start almost everyday: with a green smoothie. despite the swamp water appearance, it's quite tasty and very easy to throw together.
a note on greens: my favorite leaf to use is lacinato kale- but alas, my grocery store was out. i settled for curly kale, but just about any leaf will work. chards have a stronger flavor, spinach is very mild.
- 4 cups ripped up greens, washed with stems removed if they're thick
- 3/4 cup frozen peaches
- 3/4 cup frozen pineapple
- 1 ripe banana
- 1 box coconut water
- squirt of agave nectar (to taste, depending on the ripeness of your banana)
put all the ingredients in the blender. i find that having the greens at the bottom helps them to get pulverized completely.
close the lid and blend the heck out of it. i have a tamper in my blender, which is helpful for smashing the ingredients down. if using a smaller size blender, go with a more tender leaf, like baby spinach to prevent chunks- if a smoothie is not smooth, it's gross.
pour into 2 glasses, and force someone to drink it with you. they'll get over the color when they taste all the tropical fruitiness, and thank you for giving them a pleasant way to eat their greens.
