the most inspirational of inspirations

the last post was almost impossible to get through. not because i don't have a million things to say about vintage crewel, and not because i'm reluctant to pat myself on the back for finishing another project- but because i couldn't tear myself away from an amazing independent lens series on PBS, about the half the sky movement, which focuses on the problem of female self-worth worldwide and the people trying make a difference. the first part of Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide aired tonight, and covered the topics of gender based bias, sex trafficking, and female education in impoverished countries. the second part will air tomorrow night at 9pm eastern (check your local listings- totally worth it).

it's easy to get blown away by the celebrity presence (meg ryan, i love you. despite what you've done to your beautiful face), but that's not the point. when we're so busy being wrapped up in our daily lives, it's easy to forget that girls on this planet right now are still considered property. bought and sold. incapable of valuing their own existence due to abuse and neglect. if you feel so inclined, watch part two of this series tomorrow night. it's a very humbling reminder of how good we've got it. and a serious kick in the pants to do more for our fellow females around the globe.
