vintage crewel kit: big shrooms 1
crewel expert wanted! where's mary tyler moore when i need her?
i've been pretty addicted to mary tyler moore for a while now. i love her apartment, i love her wardrobe, i love her best friend rhoda, and i love that she does needlework:
i wanted to work on something while watching MTM, so i did a random search for vintage crewel kit, and found some great ones (cheap too). i purchased a few, but the one i was most excited about is a groovy woodland scene of mushrooms:
it's like a paint by number with yarn! the package contains enough to make 1 pillow case: printed linen, yarn, needle, and braid.
unfortunately, the instructions are vague. and lacking any important information. like how to stitch this thing. i have a fantastic book on woolly embroidery, which taught me that i needed a hoop. the instructions say to outline the shrooms with long and short stitches, and then fill them in, couching the longer stitches. thank goodness i learned how to couch, otherwise i'd be really lost.
i followed the outline with yarn, and couched it to the fabric. no idea if that's what it's supposed to look like.
then filled it in following the printed lines. again, i have no idea if this is right. are these ones supposed to be couched too? it looks much more filled in than the photo. can anyone help me? i need some advice...
