Vintage Crewel Kit: Squirrel 4

Ugh. This branch. This funky, sick looking branch has taken far too long, and I'm glad it's over. The only thing left was to outline it in and add the "wood grain" effect in stem stitches. The hope was that these stitches would really bring the illusion of a wood to life. Did it work?
Hardly. The "grain" stitches do nothing for me, and I'm about to rip them out completely. Once it's put to rest, I can focus on this rodent's fluffy tail. Thankfully, there's plenty of inspiration scurrying out back:
