reversible d ring belt

make a sweet belt look professional with very little effort.

have you been to purl soho? if you like to knit/crochet/sew/craft you should check it out. they have a beautiful selection of materials to inspire endless projects. that's where i spied this fantastic reversible web. i knew right away what to make with it- and it was much easier to assemble than i thought.

  • 1" reversible web
  • scrap of leather (the one in the photo is much bigger than needed), or ultra suede
  • 1" D rings: i made these with my new silicone molds, but any D rings will do.
  • rotary cutter or scissors
  • metal ruler (if using the rotary cutter)
  • button thread/ needle
  • tack
  • fray check
  • magna tac

i only had white thread on hand, but i wanted more of a natural color, so i tea dyed it in a cup of hot tea for a half hour before i started.

make the leather tabs

  • on the reverse side of the leather, draw 2 rectangles 1" by 3/4". make a dot in each corner of the rectangles, not too close to the edges.
  • with a tack, poke each dot slightly so you can see where the mark is on the right side.
  • flip the leather over and punch the hole through on the right side. this makes for a clean hole on the right side of the leather.
  • cut out the rectangles. i think the rotary cutter and a metal ruler makes the cleanest cut, but scissors will work as well.

assemble the belt

  • cut web to desired length. i wanted to have a tail on my belt, so i cut it longer than necessary: about 40"
  • add fray check to the cut edges of web and let dry.
  • make a cross on the back side of a leather tab with magna tac.

  • fold a leather tab over the cut edge of the web. squeeze for a few moments to help the glue adhere.
  • bring the needle and thread through all 3 layers of leather and web, using the holes punched earlier.
  • bring the needle back through the same hole a few times to securely tack stitch. trim tails.
  • repeat on the other side of tab.

  • slide 2 D rings onto the other side of the web.
  • with the second tab, add glue as before and fold it over the cut edge of the web, holding it for a moment so the glue adheres.
  • fold web over about 1 3/4", making a loop that contains the D rings.
  • tack stitch through all 4 layers as before.
  • repeat on other side of tab.
