continued testing in resin: trims and spices

sometimes weird things happen. they just do.

the last resin experiment, and the first have made me a bit cocky about my limitations. after getting promptly put in my place today, i rebounded with a minor success. these are not so much instructions, as field notes to avoid some unwearable weirdness.

round 1:

fringe

  • started by sewing and glueing 3 trims from purl soho into a bangle
  • fit the trim into the bangle mold and marked where the mini pom poms began
  • sprayed bangle mold with release and filled with clear resin
  • dipped trim into resin
  • mess occurred when resin hit the sides of mold, and trim absorbed resin

verdict: trim was not controllable and air bubbles were impossible to get rid of. resin absorbed trim= not cute.

spice

  • sprayed bangle mold with release
  • added heaping teaspoon chili powder to clear resin and poured into the mold
  • added heaping teaspoon paprika to resin mixture and poured into the mold
  • added heaping teaspoon turmeric to resin mixture and poured into the mold
  • dusted final piece with spices

verdict: should not have started with darkest color first. way too much of all spices. final color nice, completely opaque. grains of chili barely perceptible.

round 2:

tassels

  • sprayed bangle mold with release and filled 1/2 of the way with clear resin
  • added 1/2" cotton tassels all around the mold

1/2 way point observations:
- tassels have absorbed resin
- air bubbles are impossible to get rid of

potential: 50/50

spice

  • sprayed bangle mold with release and filled 3/4 of the way with clear resin
  • dusted top of resin with turmeric and swirled around with a toothpick
  • filled the mold with clear resin
  • dusted the top with chili powder and swirled with a toothpick

1/2 way point observations:
- spices sink to the bottom of the mold on their own
- amber red transparent color
- tortoise shell effect

potential: 95%

i'm feeling very good about the last one, but that's not what i consider the triumph of the day. that's reserved for the amazingly balanced set up used to get the profile shot of the tassel bangle. card stock, toothpicks, and fingers crossed. it was magical.
