resin silhouette pendant

something old in something new. wow, these silhouettes are old. like over 30 years old.

i have to preface this by saying, that these are not so much instructions, as field notes. although i'm getting progressively better, i 'm gonna suck it up and say that it was difficult to make something that looks so simple. this is still a work in progress.

  • used a silicone mold to pour clear resin ovals. the thinner the better, around 2mm is best.
  • taped oval to a print out of various sizes of our silhouettes and painted them with acrylic.

  • right about here is when i cursed the fact that i have never learned to paint. my brush strokes were a hot mess.
  • fortunately, adding a thick coat of clear resin to the surface covered almost all the flaws. this resin domes well and looks very polished.
  • poured another very thin coat of clear resin onto the back, which eliminated all the frostiness. so much so, that this is now the better looking side. that means that the portrait is facing the wrong direction.
  • used a battery operated bead reamer to drill a hole at the top of the oval.
  • added sterling bail and chain.
